A Mystical place: the monastery of Stavrovouni

Approximately 35 kilometers from Larnaca, at an altitude of 700 meters above sea level, on the top of the mountain Stavrovuni, stands the oldest monastery in Cyprus of the same name. Translated from the Greek, Stavrovuni means « Cross-Mountain » or « Mountain of the Cross. « Over its long history, the monastery of Stavrovouni was repeatedly subjected to raids, destruction, fire and neglect. At the end of the 19th century, its restoration began, but for almost a hundred years, until 1983, there was no running water or electricity on the territory of the monastery. During the restoration the monastery’s murals were recreated.
